PHENIX project: studying agrivoltaic schemes to solve energy and water supply problems

13/08/2025

As part of the PHENIX project, an expert study entitled "Territorial analysis of sustainable agricultural practices and possible integrated approaches to the introduction of alternative energy sources in small farms in Ukraine" is being conducted in the village of Nyzhnye Selyshche, Khust district, by specialists from the international non-governmental organization "Primavera".

Recently, project participants and invited experts took part in an interactive dialogue with the leadership of the starosta, representatives of cooperatives and farms engaged in various areas of crop cultivation and the use of land for pastures and hayfields in the community. The purpose of the meeting was to identify possible schemes for using agrivoltaics to solve energy and water supply problems, which will increase the economic and environmental sustainability of small agricultural producers.

Currently, experts base their calculations and conclusions on land use maps and the location of water sources and water management infrastructure. At the same time, dialogue continues with local farmers, who had the opportunity to articulate their questions in advance, thus forming an important part of the agenda for the planned activities. To visualize the key locations included in the project, specialists visited the relevant agricultural plots and farms. There, they talked to local producers and assessed the possibilities for agrivoltaics. The specialists also familiarized themselves with the state of water resources and infrastructure (rivers, wells, canals, etc.).

During the meetings, it was emphasized that small agricultural producers, represented by landowners and family farms, play an important role in agriculture and the development of rural areas in Ukraine, including in the communities of Transcarpathia. Focusing on energy efficiency and environmental responsibility in such settlements is an investment in the rational use of natural resources, which benefits the region as a whole and the local population in particular.

As a reminder, analytical research on the locations for the implementation of the PHENIX project began in Transcarpathia in July.

The PHENIX project is being implemented jointly by "Electricians without borders" and the Medical Aid Committee in Zakarpattya in partnership with the NGO "Transcarpathian Association of Local Development" with financial support from the French Development Agency (Agence Française de Développement, AFD).
